Chapter Thirteen

Blair

THE DAY STARTS OUT BADLY. I’m by no means a morning person and being jarred awake only causes me to be pissed off. Why the hell is someone banging on our door this early? I yank the door open. “It’s five o’clock in the morning. Normal people are asleep at this hour. What is going on?”

She looks down at her feet. “Uh, sorry for waking you. There’s a storm heading straight for us, so everything outside of the hotel has been shut down. We won’t be going anywhere today. I’m sure they tried to call your room, but you didn’t wake up. I just got off the phone with the manager of the hotel.”

Holy shit. Of course, a tropical storm hits while I’m here. Just my damn luck.

“Sis,” Adrian says, rubbing his eyes, “what the hell’s going on?”

Abigail goes on to explain to him about the storm while I go into the bathroom to turn on the shower. There’s no way I’m going back to sleep being wide awake now. I used to hide in the cabinet during storms when I was a small child. On a warm autumn night, when the leaves rustled outside, I’d pace waiting for a storm to hit.

“Watch out tonight. We have a chance for severe weather in our area. Make sure you have a plan in place,” the weatherman says clear as day.

I screamed and ran and sat on my dad’s lap.

When I come out of the bathroom, Adrian is sitting up in his bed with pillows behind him, watching TV. He looks comfortable and not worried at all. “Well, looks like we’re stuck in here all day. Renting movies, it is.”

I can grab the book out of my suitcase and read. We didn’t really have the same taste in movies, and I really need to finish this book anyway.

There’s a knock on the door, and Adrian jumps up to answer. “Thank you, sir. I really appreciate it.” He lugs in a trolley with food on it. “I figured I’d order in due to the storm. You hungry?”

I attempt to say no, but my grumbling stomach says otherwise. I grab a plate of food and start demolishing it when he turns on a sappy romance movie. You know, the ones where you always know how it’s going to end, but you keep watching it anyway? I despise those movies because they’re so predictable. Life isn’t predictable at all. Every day, lives change for better or worse. Nothing like movies. “Do you really want to watch this?” I only question him because it didn’t seem like it’s something he would want to watch.

“Why? What’s wrong with it?” Adrian scoffs.

I laugh so hard, food flies out of my mouth. Normally, I would be embarrassed, but I’m not trying to impress him, so I could care less. I let him watch his sappy romance crap while I read the newest thriller novel that was on the shelf at the airport. Honestly, it’s pretty good. I like books that keep me guessing what’s going to happen next.
